The transplant workforce crisis is well-described and will likely worsen in upcoming years. In 2021, over 25,000 kidney transplants were performed in the United States (US), yet 90,000 people with end-stage kidney disease remained on the deceased donor kidney transplant wait list.1 In January of 2024, the United Network of Organ Sharing (UNOS) announced an ambitious goal of achieving 60,000 deceased donor kidney transplants per year by 2026 – a 58% increase in deceased donor transplants.2 Yet as of 2020, the number of transplant nephrologists practicing in the United States was estimated to be between 1,200 and 1,400.
