Applying Dissemination and Implementation Research Methods to Translate a School-Based Asthma Program - PubMed - 3 year(s) ago

Our school-based asthma program has reduced asthma exacerbations for youth with health disparities in the Denver metropolitan area, due partly to addressing social determinants of health (SDOH), such as access to healthcare and medications. Dissemination and implementation (D&I) science approach …

Reply to “Ethnicity-based differences in asthma diagnostic thresholds” - 3 year(s) ago

We have read with interest the correspondence by Mwasuku et al1 in response to our paper exploring ethnic differences in severe asthma within UK primary and specialist care.2 With regard to the specific issue of the elevated T2 biomarker profile in ethnic minority group (EMG) patients, and whether this may be a result of bias for/against asthma diagnosis by smoking status, we think this is…

Ethnicity-based differences in asthma diagnostic thresholds - 3 year(s) ago

We read with great interest Busby et al’s1 findings of ethnic differences in severe asthma and congratulate the authors on their robust findings. They report a disproportionate disease burden, with patients from ethnic minority groups (EMGs) compared with nonethnic minority patients (non-EMG) in severe asthma, in specialist clinics, and from primary care consultations.

Deconstructing the Way We Use Pulmonary Function Test Race-Based Adjustments - 3 year(s) ago

Race is a social construct. It is used in medical diagnostic algorithms to adjust the readout for spirometry and other diagnostic tests. The authors review historic evidence about the origins of race adjustment in spirometry, and recent attention to the lack of scientific evidence for their continued use. Existing reference values imply that White patients have better lung function than non-White…
