Health insights from face photographs
Estimates of biological age, a measure of human health compared to chronological age, can be used to personalise care for people with health conditions. Previous studies have applied artificial intelligence tools to specialist clinical images to predict biological age, such as retinal images and chest radiographs. However, obtaining specialist images in the clinic can be expensive, require patients to travel, and depend on specialist training. A person’s physical appearance could also yield insights into their biological age; however, simple face photographs taken on smartphones or commercially available cameras have remained underutilised in predicting biological age.
