Niacin for Metabolic-Associated Fatty Liver Disease

Dear readers,

Niacin is the “red-headed stepchild” of lipid-lowering options in 2025, but one I use liberally in my preventive clinic. A new paper in mice identifies promise for its use, or a new pharmacologic agent, for fatty liver disease. Patients emailed me about taurine and leukemia. The paper is here and very preliminary. Some people take taurine for reported “anti-aging” and blood pressure-lowering benefits. Broken heart syndrome is in the news with an ominous report of a high mortality, particularly in male patients. Food? Plant proteins lower blood pressure, flavanols lower blood pressure (apples, tea, wine), reduced red meat lowers the risk of CVD, and the Portfolio Diet (plant strong) lowers heart risk and cholesterol levels. Finally, lower levels of the protein Klotho are associated with poor cardiometabolic health. It is possible to measure Klotho, but it is expensive. Green tea, mushrooms, and exercise are among the options to raise Klotho levels.
