Meditation is a Powerful Tool for Heart Health

Dear readers,

My first 3 articles are on the softer side of cardiovascular health: meditation, mindful eating, and hope. They are all powerful practices that should be taught and practiced. I included 2 features on olive oil discussing its impact on breast cancer and heart health. Forget about seeds oils (mainly good if you look at CVD outcomes), EVOO is the winner. Statins do not promote depression, which is good to know when so many influencers warn the public never to take them.

The Portfolio Diet and another on the power beans were 2 of more than 10 articles favoring plant-based diets just this week. Avoiding glycation is a plan including water-based cooking in place of grilling and frying. Finally, I included a high-tech one. Therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) is the rage right now in the longevity field and a research paper finds benefits. It is time consuming and very expensive (>$25,000 for 5 treatments), but may have a role for some people.

Be well,
Joel Kahn, MD, FACC

    • In a first, a randomized, placebo-controlled trial has been performed to assess the safety and effects on biological age of therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) regimens in healthy adults over 50. Therapeutic plasma exchange is a procedure that separates, removes, and replaces patient plasma to treat certain diseases. Participants received bi-weekly TPE with or without intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG), monthly TPE, or placebo. The results of the clinical trial suggest that TPE combined with intravenous immunoglobulin reduced biological age on average by 2.6 years.
